Pre-Emergent Weed Control

Pre-Emergent Weed Control
What is Pre-Emergent?
Pre-emergent herbicides are chemicals that prevent weeds from germinating in the soil, whether it be in turf or granite areas. These herbicides control annual weeds by inhibiting cell division in a young weed seedling's root system. The failure of the root system to develop results in the death of the weed shortly after germination. When this type of herbicide is applied, it requires water to carry and disperse it into the top 2” of the soil. The pre-emergent then attaches itself to organic matter in the soil and acts as a weed barrier for the duration of the season.
Why should I do Pre-Emergent?
Both Property Managers and Landscape Companies will benefit from a successful pre-emergent application. Removing weeds by hand or by spraying post-emergent will take time away from other pertinent weekly maintenance tasks. A property with a weed infestation is aggravating for both sides. By preventing a weed outbreak, property quality is maintained and allows Landscape Companies to focus on detail and quality, ultimately enhancing curb appeal.
When should I have Pre-Emergent applied?
Timing is critical to the success of a pre-emergent application. Applications are made prior to the start of each weed season (Summer/Winter-July/December). Coincidentally, each season should be accompanied by rain. In the granite areas there is no irrigation so we rely on the seasonal rain to wash the product into the soil and activate it. After the product is applied, there is an approximate 3-4 week period for the chemical to be washed in. If the product is not washed into the soil, or is not washed in deep enough, the active ingredient in the chemical breaks down, rendering it ineffective. This will result in weeds emerging and frustration for the Property Managers.
